As time goes by, elements like snow or road salt get into the wheel spacers and rims. Under chemical action, these corrosive elements tightly glue your wheel to the hub, making it almost impossible to remove the spacers. These objects can also become very tight due to the forces.

Can You Remove Wheel Spacers Easily?
Some wheel spacers are machined with disassembly grooves, and if you’re using these, you can usually remove them with a simple flat-head screwdriver. The disassembly grooves refer to the small notches which are distributed on the corner of wheel spacers. Normally, a notch leaves a limited clearance between the brake rotor and spacer. When removing the spacer, place a screwdriver into the notch and then simply apply force at an angle, you can separate the spacer from the axle hub easily and efficiently. These disassembly grooves contribute to reducing the spacer’s weight, to some extent.
Without such disassembly grooves, you probably have to work harder to remove these spacers. For some cheap steel spacers, the rust can make them snug enough to the brake rotor. Once the spacers are stuck too tight onto the axle, by forces effect, it can be difficult to dismount. If not properly operated, you may destroy the spacers or damage the axle hub.
Can Wheel Spacers Be Better Corrosion Resistance?
Anodized aluminum wheel spacers are good options for better corrosion resistance. Due to its metallic properties, when exposed to air or water, the aluminum alloy forms a layer of oxide which renders it non-reactive with elements that are corrosive to the underlying metal. So aluminum wheel spacers are not easy to corrode or oxidize. Besides, they feature good finishing characteristics and respond well to anodizing. A hard anodizing coating ensures complete protection against rust and corrosion. This is good for those who live in a moist climate.
All in all, there are several precautions that help you prevent wheel spacers from rust or corrosion. When installing the wheel spacers, always remember to put anti-seize on both surfaces of the spacers and the inner bore of the wheel. Also, apply anti-seize on the wheel bolts. If you have ever removed the wheel spacers, do some cleaning for all connecting surfaces. Spray degreaser on the lug studs and the brake rotor and wipe them down with the emery cloth. Make sure the contact surfaces are smooth and clean.
